Headed into Algonquin for the first time? Here's what we tell every first-time renter:
1. Pack light, then pack lighter. The temptation is to bring everything. Resist it. You'll be portaging, and every kilo will be felt. The cliché is true: take half the gear and twice the money.
2. Bring proper rain gear. Not a poncho. A real rain jacket, real rain pants, and a dry-bag for your sleeping bag. Algonquin gets weather; assume you'll be in it.
3. Practice portaging on dry land. Lifting a canoe overhead is its own skill. Try it before you're tired and hungry on day three.
4. Map and compass. Phones die. GPS units die. The park maps are excellent — get one, learn to read it, and bring a backup compass.
5. Don't skimp on food. You'll burn 3,000+ calories a day paddling and portaging. Pack accordingly: dehydrated meals are great, but bring real snacks too.
Stop in before you head out and we'll go over your route. The portages are not always where the map says they are.
